Virtanen fights back from a set down to beat Pinnington Jones

Otto Virtanen recovered from a one-sided opening set to beat Jack Pinnington Jones 2-6 7-6 6-3 in the US Open qualifying semifinals. The Finn was overrun early, landing only 57.7 percent of his first serves and coughing up eight double faults, but he leaned on 7 aces and 67.9 percent of first-serve points to steady himself in the second-set tie-break. Pinnington Jones served the better numbers behind his first ball, winning 70.2 percent, yet found it in only 51.1 percent of the time and added 7 double faults of his own. Virtanen's reward was a place in the final qualifying round.
