Valdmannova downs Carle 6-3 6-3 in US Open qualifying
Vendula Valdmannova controlled her US Open qualifying quarterfinal from the start, beating Maria Lourdes Carle 6-3, 6-3 in a straight-sets win that never slipped away from her. The difference came behind the first ball: the Czech landed 63.6 percent of her first serves and won 65.7 percent of those points, while Carle, despite a tidier 72.7 percent first-serve rate, converted only 52.1 percent of hers. Both players were untidy at times, with seven double faults apiece and matching totals of one ace, and neither found much shelter on second serve. Valdmannova moves through to the final qualifying round.
