Udvardy edges tight opener, races past Joint in Monterrey

Panna Udvardy needed a tie-break to settle the opening set, then pulled clear in a one-sided second to beat Maya Joint 7-6, 6-1 in the Monterrey round of 32. The Hungarian's first delivery decided it: she landed 60 percent of them and won 79.5 percent of those points, against 56.4 percent for Joint, and struck seven aces to the Australian's one. Joint's five double faults added to her trouble, though she was the steadier of the two behind a second ball, taking 42.9 percent to Udvardy's 30.8. It was a clean, efficient start to the week for Udvardy.
