Starodubtseva downs Tjen in straight sets in Monterrey
Yuliia Starodubtseva controlled her round-of-16 match at the WTA event in Monterrey, beating Janice Tjen 6-4 6-3 without ever surrendering the initiative. The Ukrainian's serve was the difference: she struck five aces to Tjen's none and won 68.4% of her first-serve points, against 59.5% for her opponent, even though she landed only 55.1% of first deliveries. Behind the second ball the pair were close, 51.6% to 52.2%, but Starodubtseva kept the errors down with just two double faults to Tjen's three. The win carried the Ukrainian into the quarterfinals on hard court.
