Barthel edges Osuigwe 6-3 7-5 in US Open qualifying

Mona Barthel came through a straight-sets win over Whitney Osuigwe, 6-3 7-5, to reach the final round of US Open qualifying. The German's first serve was erratic — just 52.5 percent in, with seven double faults — but when it landed it was decisive, winning 71.9 percent of those points and producing six aces. Osuigwe found the box more often, at 60.8 percent, yet took only 45.8 percent of her first-serve points and matched Barthel's seven double faults, never establishing the same free points. That difference carried Barthel through the tighter second set and one step closer to the main draw.
