Garland edges Romero Gormaz in three sets in US Open qualifying

Joanna Garland recovered from a set down to beat Leyre Romero Gormaz 4-6 6-4 7-5 in the qualifying quarterfinals at the US Open. The Taiwanese player leaned on a steadier delivery, landing 63.2% of her first serves and winning 71.6% of those points, while Romero Gormaz found the box only 43.6% of the time and had to defend far too often behind her second ball. Both were erratic, Garland striking four aces against ten double faults and the Spaniard seven aces with nine doubles. Garland's 48.8% haul on second serve was enough to see out a tense decider and move a step closer to the main draw.
