Fery beats Hewitt 6-1 7-5 in Winston-Salem opener
Arthur Fery made a decisive start and then held his nerve, beating Cruz Hewitt 6-1 7-5 in the Winston-Salem round of 32. The first set was gone almost before it began, and the difference lived in the second-serve column: Fery won 45.5 percent of those points while Hewitt managed just 14.3 percent, a gap that left the Australian defending far too often. Both men landed 65.6 percent of first serves, but Fery struck four aces to one and edged the first-serve exchanges 71.4 to 67.5. For the Briton, it was a clean, controlled passage into the next round.
