Smith rallies past Pellegrino to reach US Open qualifying semis
Colton Smith recovered from a set down to beat Andrea Pellegrino 4-6 6-3 6-4 in the US Open qualifying quarterfinals. The American's serve was the difference once he settled: he landed 61.6% of first deliveries and won 75.4% of those points, striking 10 aces to Pellegrino's five. The Italian never found the same platform, putting only 53.9% of first serves in play and taking just 59.7% of those points, while four double faults added to the pressure. Smith's three double faults were a minor blemish on an otherwise controlled hold record, and the win carries him into the qualifying semifinals in New York.
