Zidansek edges Samson in three sets in US Open qualifying
Tamara Zidansek came from a set down to beat Laura Samson 6-7 6-4 7-5 in the final set of the US Open qualifying quarterfinals, surviving a match that stayed on serve until the very end. The Slovenian's steadier delivery made the difference: she landed 65.3% of first serves and won 68.2% of those points, against 54.0% and 66.7% for Samson. The Czech's seven aces came at a heavy cost, as nine double faults and just 52.2% of second-serve points won left her exposed. Zidansek's five double faults mattered less, and she moves through to the qualifying semifinals.
