Rottgering edges Choinski in three sets at Winston-Salem
Mees Rottgering came through a three-set battle in the Winston-Salem first round, beating Jan Choinski 7-5 2-6 6-4. The Dutchman's serve held up on the biggest points despite landing only 55.8% of his first deliveries, as he won 75.5% behind the first ball and a healthy 59.5% behind the second. Choinski matched him for firepower with 10 aces to Rottgering's nine, but nine double faults and just 52.8% of second-serve points won proved costly in a match decided by fine margins. It was a hard-earned win that carried Rottgering into the second round.
