Galarneau Edges Smith 7-6 6-3 in US Open Qualifying
Alexis Galarneau came through a tight opening set and then pulled clear, beating Keegan Smith 7-6, 6-3 in the US Open qualifying quarterfinals. The Canadian was the steadier server where it counted, winning 80.5 percent of his first-serve points and an unusually high 69.0 percent behind his second, despite landing only 58.6 percent of first deliveries. Smith struck 10 aces to Galarneau's four, but he won just 45.2 percent of his second-serve points, and that gap decided the tiebreak and the second set. Both men served three double faults. Galarneau moved a step closer to the main draw.
