Altmaier downs Comesana 6-1 7-6 in Winston-Salem opener
Daniel Altmaier needed only a lopsided opening set and a tense tie-break to see off Francisco Comesana 6-1 7-6 in the Winston-Salem round of 32. The German's edge came behind the first ball: he landed 62.5% of first serves and won 75% of those points, while Comesana, despite a healthier 69.3% first-serve rate, converted just 53.8% of them. Five double faults from the Argentine, against two from Altmaier, kept handing back the initiative, and only three aces were needed on the winner's side. Altmaier's reward was a place in the second round.
