Lazaro Garcia edges Avanesyan 6-3 7-6 in US Open qualifying
Andrea Lazaro Garcia came through in straight sets at the US Open qualifying quarterfinals, taking the opener 6-3 before holding her nerve to claim the second in a tie-break, 7-6. The Spaniard's first delivery was the difference: she landed 67.6 percent of them and won 79.2 percent of those points, while Elina Avanesyan managed only 61.2 percent behind her own first ball. Both players struggled once the first serve missed, and neither hit an ace, with Avanesyan's seven double faults outnumbering the five from Lazaro Garcia. The win moved the Spaniard a step closer to the main draw.
