Sonego edges Herbert in three sets at Winston-Salem
Lorenzo Sonego needed three sets to move past Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the Winston-Salem round of 64, taking it 7-6 4-6 6-3 after the Frenchman levelled the match. The Italian's serve was the difference: 10 aces to Herbert's none, and 78.6% of points won behind his first delivery against 73.6% for his opponent. Neither man was reliable on second balls, but Sonego won half of those points while Herbert managed only 43.6%, and both were untidy with 7 and 8 double faults respectively. On similar first-serve percentages, 58.3 to 57.6, the finer margins fell Sonego's way and carried him into the next round.
