Guerrieri edges Holmgren in three sets in US Open qualifying
Andrea Guerrieri came through a three-set battle to beat August Holmgren 6-3 6-7 6-2 in the US Open qualifying quarterfinals. The Italian took the opener, was pegged back in a second-set tiebreak, then pulled clear again in the decider. The difference lay in the second-ball exchanges: Guerrieri won 62.5% of his second-serve points while Holmgren managed just 38.2%, and the Dane's six double faults outweighed his 11 aces. Guerrieri landed only 55.6% of his first serves but won 72% of those points, and that efficiency carried him into the final round of qualifying.
