Garin edges Johnson in two tiebreaks in US Open qualifying

Cristian Garin survived a three-set marathon in the US Open qualifying quarterfinals, taking the opening set in a tiebreak, dropping the second 6-4 and then holding his nerve in a final-set breaker to win 7-6 4-6 7-6. The Chilean's serve was a wild ride: 10 aces but also 10 double faults, with just 59.7 percent of first serves landed, though he won 67.5 percent of those points and held firm at 50 percent behind the second. Spencer Johnson matched him almost step for step, landing the same 59.7 percent of first serves and winning 71.6 percent of them with eight aces, but 48 percent on second serve left him short. Garin moved a win from the main draw.
