Vandecasteele edges Herbert in three to reach Winston-Salem main draw

Quinn Vandecasteele came from a set down to beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert 3-6 7-6 7-5 in the final round of qualifying at Winston-Salem. The American was patchy behind his first delivery, landing just 49.5 percent, but he won 69.2 percent of those points and, crucially, 52.8 percent behind his second serve. Herbert's serve told the opposite story: 53.9 percent of first serves in and 71 percent of them won, yet only 45.3 percent on the second ball and a costly 15 double faults against Vandecasteele's seven. Five aces to one underlined the American's edge on the big points, and the win earned him a main-draw place.
