Gorzny beats Polmans in three sets in Winston-Salem qualifying
Sebastian Gorzny came through a swinging three-setter to beat Marc Polmans 6-2 1-6 6-2 in the qualifying semifinals at Winston-Salem. The serve told most of the story: Gorzny struck nine aces to Polmans's one and landed 67.1 percent of his first deliveries, winning 66.7 percent of those points, while the Australian found only 53.5 percent of his first serves and coughed up six double faults to Gorzny's three. Gorzny's own second serve was a weakness, yielding just 24.0 percent of points won, which helped explain the lopsided middle set. The win carried him into the final qualifying round.
