Tommy Paul came from a set down to beat Alexander Zverev 4-6 7-6 6-4 in the Cincinnati round of 16, turning the match with a second-set tiebreak. The difference was cleanliness under pressure: Paul dropped just one double fault all afternoon, while Zverev's 14 aces were offset by nine of his own. Their first-serve numbers were almost identical, 74.6% of points won for Paul against 74.3% for the German, so the margin came behind the second delivery, where the American won 60.6% to Zverev's 53.1%. It was a statement win for Paul at a Masters 1000.
