Pegula edges Cirstea in three sets to reach Cincinnati quarters
Jessica Pegula survived a three-set battle with Sorana Cirstea, 6-2 4-6 7-5, to reach the quarter-finals in Cincinnati. The American controlled the opening set behind a solid delivery, landing 67.4 percent of her first serves and winning 67.2 percent of those points, but Cirstea hit back to force a decider. The Romanian's serve ultimately let her down: she found only 54.6 percent of first balls and coughed up four double faults to Pegula's two, while winning just 36.4 percent behind her second serve. Pegula's four aces and steadier hold record carried her through a final set that stayed on serve until the last game.
