Shnaider beats Maria in straight sets in Cincinnati
Diana Shnaider needed just two sets to see off Tatjana Maria 6-2 7-5 in the Cincinnati round of 64, controlling the opener before holding her nerve in a tighter second. The Russian's serve was the steadier of the two: she landed 55.7% of first deliveries and won 67.6% of those points, while her second ball held up remarkably well at 63.0%. Maria, by contrast, found only 48.4% of first serves, won 51.6% behind them and just 45.5% on the second, with eight double faults compounding the problem. Shnaider's reward was a place in the next round of the WTA 1000.
