Jodar edges Shapovalov in three sets in Cincinnati opener
Rafael Jodar came through a three-set battle in the Cincinnati Round of 64, beating Denis Shapovalov 7-5 4-6 7-5 after losing the second set. The Spaniard's steadier delivery told the story: he landed 65.2 percent of his first serves and won 66.7 percent of those points, while Shapovalov found the box only 50.9 percent of the time and coughed up seven double faults to Jodar's four. Shapovalov was marginally sharper behind his first ball, winning 69.1 percent, but he could not build enough rhythm from the baseline. For Jodar, it was a hard-earned win at Masters 1000 level.
