Emiliana Arango needed only two one-sided sets to see off Venus Williams 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round in Cincinnati, controlling the match from the baseline and on serve throughout. The Colombian landed 73.5% of her first serves and won 72.2% of those points, adding 61.5% behind her second delivery and just one double fault to keep her service games largely untroubled. Williams, by contrast, found only 58.0% of first serves and won 41.4% of those points, a shortfall that handed over the initiative in nearly every game she served. It was a clean, confidence-building win for Arango at WTA 1000 level.
