McNally beats Kessler in straight sets in Cincinnati opener
Caty McNally came through an all-American first-round meeting at the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati, seeing off McCartney Kessler 6-3, 6-4 without dropping a set. The difference lay on first serve: McNally landed 61.8 percent of hers and won 70.6 percent of those points, while Kessler put only 57.8 percent in play and took just 52.1 percent behind it. Six double faults and 42.9 percent won on second serve gave McNally moments of trouble, but Kessler, with one ace and three double faults of her own, could not build enough pressure. The win sent McNally into the second round.
