Waltert fights back to beat Marcinko in Cincinnati opener
Simona Waltert recovered from a set down to beat Petra Marcinko 5-7 6-4 6-2 in the Cincinnati first round. The Swiss served erratically — just 47.4% of her first deliveries landed and she struck eight double faults — but she was punishing when she found the box, winning 71.7 percent of her first-serve points and firing six aces. The difference came behind the second ball, where Waltert took 54.9 percent of the points to Marcinko's 48.8, and the Croat's steadier 61.3 percent first-serve rate could not offset it. The comeback earned Waltert a place in the second round.
