Swiatek edges Svitolina in three sets to reach Toronto final
Iga Swiatek came through a swinging semifinal in Toronto, beating Elina Svitolina 6-3 1-6 6-3 after losing her grip completely in the middle set. The Pole's serve was the steadier platform overall: she landed 70.9 percent of her first deliveries against Svitolina's 63.6, and won 46.7 percent behind the second ball to the Ukrainian's 42.9. Svitolina was the more damaging when her first serve did land, taking 59.2 percent of those points to Swiatek's 54.8, which helped explain her runaway second set. Both struck one ace and both served four double faults. Swiatek's reward was a place in the final.
