Claire Liu controlled a straight-sets win over Polina Iatcenko, 6-4 6-2, in the final qualifying round in Cincinnati. The American's serve was the difference: she landed 66.7 percent of first deliveries and won 75 percent of those points, striking six aces against just two double faults. Iatcenko's delivery came apart behind it, with ten double faults and only 15 percent of second-serve points won, a figure that made every service game a struggle even though her first-serve percentage of 64.3 was close to Liu's. The result carried Liu through to the main draw.
