Tien cruises past Merida 6-3 6-2 in Montreal quarterfinals

Learner Tien needed no more than two comfortable sets to reach the last four in Montreal, beating Daniel Merida 6-3 6-2 in a quarterfinal he controlled from start to finish. The American's serve was the foundation: 73.1% of first deliveries found the box, he won 71.1% of those points and a solid 64.3% behind the second ball, without a single double fault. Merida, by contrast, landed only 61.8% of first serves and won just 52.9% of them, while his second serve produced only 42.9%. It was a clean, error-free performance that carried Tien into the semifinals.
