Budkov Kjaer edges Gaston in three sets in Cincinnati qualifying
Nicolai Budkov Kjaer came through a three-set battle with Hugo Gaston 6-2 3-6 6-4 to reach the final round of Cincinnati qualifying. The Norwegian's first delivery was the difference: he landed 58.7% of his first serves and won 75.9% of those points, against 62.5% for Gaston, and struck the match's only four aces. Gaston was steadier behind his second ball, winning 55.3% of those points to Budkov Kjaer's 36.8%, and his five double faults left him with little margin. The winner absorbed the mid-match dip and served his way through a tight decider on hard court.
