Osaka serves past Fernandez 6-4 6-4 in Toronto last 16
Naomi Osaka came through a tight straight-setter against Leylah Fernandez, taking the Toronto round of 16 by an identical 6-4 6-4 in front of a home crowd hoping for the Canadian. The serve was the difference: Osaka landed 67.9 percent of her first deliveries and won 76.3 percent of those points, backing it up with 66.7 percent behind her second and seven aces to just two double faults. Fernandez, by contrast, found only 61.4 percent of first serves and won 60.0 percent of them, with 59.1 percent on second serve leaving her without a cushion. For Osaka, it was a clean, controlled hard-court performance.
